Oakland Renames Street After Tupac Shakur

Oakland’s City Council voted unanimously on May 16th to rename a street after Tupac. Tupac Shakur Way will be on MacArthur Boulevard between Grand Avenue and Van Buren Avenue, where the rap legend leased an apartment in the early ’90s. It’s the origin of his solo career, and he released ‘2Pacalypse Now’ after disbanding from Digital Underground.

The proposal was first introduced by councilmember Caroll Fife. “The City Council intends to honor Tupac Shakur’s contribution to Oakland and the Bay Area by retaining the existing street name, adding an additional honorary street name and installing commemorative plaques or signs and intends that the costs associated with such a commemorative act will be borne by the Tupac Shakur Foundation,” she stated.
