Beyoncé Wins Legal Battle to Trademark Blue Ivy’s Name

After a 12-year long legal battle Beyoncé will finally be able to trademark daughter Blue Ivy’s name.
The “Single Ladies” singer gave birth to her eldest daughter in January 2012. Shortly after, she attempted to trademark her daughter’s unique name. However, she ran into legal issues as another individual claimed rights to the name.
Veronica Morales, a wedding planner, contested Beyoncé’s filing because her business was named Blue Ivy Events. Paperwork revealed Morales’ business had been using the name since September 2009.
After eight years of court filings, a tribunal was held in 2020, rejecting Morales’ complaints. The USPTO ruled that the two names were not similar enough. Despite the victory it was reported that the Houston-born singer lawyers abandoned the application.

In November 2023, Beyoncé applied again, but she faced new challenges. An examiner issued a tentative ruling due to a Wisconsin clothing store having a Blue Ivy logo. According to The U.S. Sun documents claimed that Blue Ivy Carter was too “confusingly similar” to the clothing store.
After challenging the new claims, it appears the “Lemonade” singer has been given the green light. An examining attorney has since amended the appeal, and has given approval to The Trademark Official Gazette on December 31.
Documents indicate that if no objections are made within thirty days the Carter’s lawyers will be issued a Notice of Allowance.
