SWV Biopic Is Officially In The Works

As reported previously by theJasmineBRAND, multi-platinum and Grammy nominated 90s R&B trio SWV is officially in talks with the Lifetime network to produce their highly anticipated and long talked about biopic on their rise to fame as a girl group.

According to close sources, they’re already:

“working on the script”. 

The ladies had been already talking to different networks prior to the pandemic, and now the news has been solidified. Lead singer Cheryl “Coko” Gamble has hinted at the possibly of a biopic back in 2019 when she posted a photo on her Instagram posed up with R&B singer/songwriter Sevyn Streeter with the caption reading:

Me & my baby @sevyn ❤️ She has to play me in the SWV biopic! She looks so much like me. ❤️ #SWV #Sevyn

Sevyn, who’s also known for showing love to the 90s era has previously sampled SWV’s “Anything” on her 2017 debut album, Girl Disrupted on the single “Anything U Want” featuring Wiz Khalifa, Jeremih & Ty Dolla $ign. She’s also a big fan of the late Aaliyah and has paid homage to her in the past. SWV group member Taj George has also hinted back in November of 2019 that the Florida native would star in the biopic playing Coko’s character by posting a photo of the group accompanied by Sevyn laying across the three of them.

SWV made their debut on the music scene back in 1992 with their debut album, It’s About Time, with Billboard chart-topping hits like “I’m So Into You,” “Anything,” “Right Here,” “Downtown,” and their biggest to date, “Weak.” Their sophomore album, New Beginning only propelled them to superstardom with smashes like, “You’re The One” and the Neptunes-produced, “Use Your Heart.” Their third offering before disbanding was 1997’s Release Some Tension including hits like the lead single, “Someone” featuring Puff Daddy, “Lose My Cool” featuring Redman, “Can We” featuring Missy Elliott (which also appeared on the Booty Call soundtrack) and their ballad, “Rain.”

The group went on to focus on solo endeavors by 1998, with Coko releasing five solo albums in both R&B and the gospel genres over the years. The trio reunited in 2005 and has been touring since, and released their follow up albums, I Missed Us in 2012 and Still in 2016. They launched their reality tv show, SWV: Reunited in 2014, which ran for two seasons. The group has went on to sell over 25 million records worldwide to date, making them one of the best-selling female groups of all time.

Group member Lelee Lyons recently appeared on Growing Up Hip-Hop alongside her daughter, Margaret Lyons, and son, rapper, Khiry Lyons.
