Red Carpet Recap: The 16th Annual BET Hip Hop Awards + Classic Rap Show “Rap City” Is Back

It’s that time again! The 2021 BET Hip Hop Awards was in full effect this past weekend and MusicXclusives was in the building to capture it all. This year’s award show was nothing short of a good time and BET did not disappoint. BET’s red carpet saw the likes of many artists including Young Thug, Gunna, Tyler the Creator, Remy Ma and Papoose, Erica Banks, DreamDoll, Latto, Nick Cannon and more.

Returning to the stage to host was 85 South podcast crew and comedians Karlous Miller, DC Young Fly, AND Chico Bean who always bring the funny.

Young Thug, Gunna, Bia, Lil Jon, Baby Keem, and Isaiah Rashad are set to perform and blaze the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre stage. Hip Hop powerhouses Trina, Jermaine Dupri, and Remy Ma, alongside R&B superstar Tank, are slated to present.

Some of the biggest awards of the night are those in honor of some of the legends in the hip hop game. Nelly is to receive the “I Am Hip Hop” Award. Global entertainment icon, 2021 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and founder and CEO of Rock The Bells, LL COOL J, will present the first-ever “Rock the Bells Cultural 
Influence Award” to Grammy-Award winning rapper, producer, 
entrepreneur and four-time “Bet Hip Hop Awards” nominee Tyler, the Creator honoring his impressive cultural contributions, talent and unbound creativity, that has cemented him as one of the most innovative forces in music.

Viewers can also look forward to a special tribute performance for the late Biz Markie by legendary hip hop artist Big Daddy Kane.

Nominees include Cardi B, Lil Durk, and Megan Thee Stallion, who are all leading the pack with nine nominations each, followed by Drake with an impressive eight nominations. Other nominees include J. Cole, DJ Khaled, Nicki Minaj, Doja Cat, Chris Brown, Lil Nas X and more.

BET also announced the return of the longest running rap show on the network Rap City which will air October 5th at 8pm. “Rap City 21” will be executively produced and hosted by Big Tigger, and will celebrate the culture with feature exclusive interviews from Jermaine Dupri, Tobe Nwigwe, Fat Joe, Jeezy, DJ Drama  and more. The show debuted in 1989 and became a central hub for all things hip hop including music videos, important culture commentary, interviews and its famous freestyles from artist like Jay-Z, A Tribe Called Quest, LL Cool J, Kanye West, Eve, Ludacris, The Diplomats, Jadakiss, Trina, Common, Big Boi, Killer Mike, and many more!

BET definitely knows how to make a statement so tune in on October 5th at 8pm for the premier of Rap City 21 and at 9pm for the 16th Annual BET Hip Hop Awards.
