Artist Spotlight: Shaé Universe

Published

on

Shaé Universe exemplifies the beauty of rhythm and blues. Her vocal ranges are uniquely cultivated as an alto-soprano – almost in conjunction to Toni Braxton and Meshell Ndegeocello. Her sultry sound compliments her vibrant and fearless persona – prohibiting the negative aspects of the music industry and curated her own lane by her own terms.

In a recent interview, Shaé Universe vocalizes about the discrimination of being a woman of African descent and having to stand firm to gain respect:

“I could talk to you about the trials and tribulations I’ve had from now until the end of the year. [But] One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced so far is being respected as an artist in the UK music industry. It’s important to stand up for yourself as a woman in the industry, purely because no one will. Sadly.” [Source

So, who exactly is Shaé Universe?

The singer-songwriter originated from Nigeria, though her roots migrated to the United Kingdom in her younger years.

It would be a presumption that the Nigerian beauty developed a love for music growing up – considering she completed her studies in American Theatre prior to taking her musical accolades to the industry. In later years, she would cite the influences of Gospel music, and being inspired by artists such as: Erykah Badu, Jazmine Sullivan, and Brandy – to whom she credits for assembling her divine sound and songwriting abilities.

Once graduating from school, her musical accolades began to flourish despite the discriminatory adversities. Receiving recognition from Chance the Rapper, Stormzy, and Ms. Banks – she also collaborated with R&B heavy hitters such as: Etta Bond, Kojo Funds, and opened for R&B crooner Ricardo Williams.

Organically amassing over a million streams on Spotify and well over 300k YouTube streams, it is evident that Shae’s Universe is solidifying her territory in the music business. With records such as “Levels,” and “You Lose,” which defines a proclamation of self-love and defiance.

As the new year has entered with a vengeance, Shae Universe released a new single that embodies a dimension of melanin enrichment, whilst being threatened and intimidated by society. Her heartfelt lyrics embarks a fuel of passion to adjust our crowns and embrace the beauty of our melanin – as our ancestors once did. The reassurance that Black people are indeed royalty, holds evident on “Royalty.”

Collaborating with UK rapper, Kojey Radical – their cinematographic effort acquires a combination of Medevil with upper echelon sequence. Like the audio, the record is nothing short of amazing. “Royalty,” is produced by Olly Hodding and the video is directed by, Ray Fiasco.
