Taraji P. Henson and Regina Hall open 2019 BET Awards

2020 marks BET’s 40th anniversary and the network is refusing to let the Covid-19 pandemic spoil their celebration. Despite having to cancel all BET Experience events leading up to the BET Awards, network execs have found a creative way to keep the party going for fans worldwide.

According to Variety.com, the BET Awards will air as scheduled on Sunday, June 28th, but instead replacing its traditional format with “innovative techniques and artist generated content.”

“The BET Awards are a seminal event – the biggest celebration of Black culture, Black accomplishment, Black excellence, and Black potential,” explained Scott Mills, president of BET. “Our community, and the many millions who love Black culture, look to the BET Awards for signature moments of enrichment, entertainment and empowerment.  Recognizing the unique role the BET Awards plays for so many, and the challenging times we find ourselves in, we know it was more important than ever to deliver the BET Awards in 2020.”

This year also commemorates the 20th anniversary of the BET Awards first broadcast.
