The Met Gala Done Went Black!

This years Met Gala was hosted on Monday May 5 at its usual Metropolitan Museum in New York City. This years theme “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.”
The theme was inspired by the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition, which explores the history of Black dandyism, along with the use of style as a form of resistance and self-expression. Although focusing on Black style, the dress code was “Tailored For You” centering around reflecting the exhibition’s emphasis on menswear.
This years Met Gala featured musical guest such as Teyana Taylor, Cardi B, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, and many more. Each guest brought their unique fashion sense, combining it with the Met’s theme for a stunning result. Let’s break down a few standout looks:
Rihanna
sported a custom Marc Jacobs gown that revealed a delightful surprise—her baby bump. Paired with a polka dot ascot, the look perfectly embodied the theme. The Barbados-born artist has graced the Met Gala carpet for the past eleven years.

Teyana Taylor
A Harlem native, did not disappoint in a tailored pinstripe suit. Her look was elevated by a large padded cape with the words “Harlem Rose” stitched into the fabric. Taylor collaborated with Oscar-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter to bring this ensemble to life.
Nicki Minaj
Attending her eighth Met Gala, wore Thom Browne. She described her outfit to ET as reflecting “a proud period of African Americans,” and praised Browne for his attention to craftsmanship. Minaj said the outfit reminded her of “putting on your Sunday’s best and being iconic in your own world.”

Doechii
The Grammy-Award winning rapper, arrived in a custom Louis Vuitton short suit. The precise tailoring of her outfit captured the theme’s essence. Her look was completed with an “LV” on her right cheek and gold grills, making a bold statement.
Cardi B
The Bronx native, turned heads in a green Burberry suit designed by Daniel Lee. Inspired by the Victorian era, the look included a silk devoré shirt. While the front was polished and sophisticated, the back featured a playful cutout showcasing her tattoos. Though many attendees leaned into masculine tailoring, Cardi offered a feminine twist on the theme.

Lauryn Hill
With her debut Met Gala Lauryn took a rare twist. While most guests chose dark tones, Hill went bold and bright. Staying true to the theme, her suit was impeccably tailored—from the curved neckline to the structured silhouette.
This year’s Met Gala was truly one for the books, with a theme that beautifully celebrated African-American culture and fashion.
