Angie Stone, Influential Force in Hip-Hop and Neo-Soul, Dead at 63


Angie Stone was a pivotal figure in bridging hip-hop and R&B, leaving a lasting mark on the music scene.
The music industry is in shock following the unexpected and heartbreaking loss of Angie Stone, a trailblazer in neo-soul who seamlessly blended hip-hop and R&B. She tragically passed away at 63 due to a car accident in Alabama early Saturday morning (March 1). Tributes flooded in from social media and various corners of pop culture, while her family requested privacy during this tough time. According to HotNewHipHop, a statement regarding her passing was shared by the family on Monday (March 3) through the Atlanta-based law firm Weems Firm.
“It is with heavy hearts that the children of the R&B Singer Angie Stone along with her extended family want to thank you all for your love and well wishes at what is an extremely difficult time,” the statement noted. “Angie was an example for Black women and girls everywhere, Angie also loved and championed for Black Men with her number one hit entitled ‘Brotha.’ Angie Stone believed in giving back to her fans and the community with her Foundation, ‘Angel Stripes, the Angie Stone Foundation.’ She lived and died doing what she loved most which was music. Her love of God and her faith led her to have a deep desire to share her belief in God and bring more people to Christ.”
Additionally, the family’s statement highlighted her membership in the Divine Nine with the Zeta Phi Beta sorority and her recent studies at the College for Ministry. They mentioned that they are still organizing a funeral service and encouraged fans to keep her “legacy alive.”
Moreover, the Associated Press provided further details about the car accident that claimed Angie Stone’s life. She was traveling in a 2021 Mercedes-Benz sprinter with several others, returning to Atlanta from a performance in Alabama. According to the Alabama Highway Patrol, a vehicle rolled over on Interstate 65 at about 4:25 AM on Saturday, March 1. Shortly after, a 33-year-old man from Texas crashed into the Sprinter while driving a 2021 Freightliner Cascadia truck. Everyone else in the van survived.
