Chris Brown Sues Warner Brothers for Millions
Virginia-born singer Chris Brown is suing the production company Warner Brothers for $500 million over a docuseries in which he believes he was falsely labeled as an abuser.
In Investigation Discovery’s docuseries titled Chris Brown: A History of Violence, the singer alleges that he was portrayed as a serial rapist and abuser. A lawsuit was filed by Brown’s attorneys in a Los Angeles court on January 21. According to PEOPLE, court documents reveal that the docuseries featured several women detailing their alleged experiences with Brown.
The “Under The Influence” singer is suing Warner Brothers, Ample Entertainment, and the documentary’s producers for alleged defamation, libel, and infliction of emotional distress based on the claims made in the docuseries. A Jane Doe featured in the documentary alleges that Brown raped her in 2020, but his attorneys have denied those allegations.
The lawsuit claims, “This case is about the media prioritizing their own profits over the truth,” further stating that the network knew “it was full of lies and deception, violating journalistic principles.”
Brown’s attorneys argue that the woman identified as Jane Doe has previously been “discredited” and is an alleged “perpetrator of intimate partner violence and an aggressor herself.” The lawsuit emphasizes that Brown has never been convicted of any sex crimes, yet the project portrays him as a “serial rapist” and “sexual abuser.”
The “Look at Me Now” singer has worked relentlessly over the past decade to redeem his reputation after being charged with two felonies stemming from the 2009 assault of his then-girlfriend, Rihanna. In June 2009, Brown pleaded guilty and was sentenced to community labor, five years of probation, and domestic violence counseling.
The lawsuit further states, “Mr. Brown has grown from those experiences, and his evolution speaks for itself. This new production ignores that growth, choosing instead to repackage stale accusations while amplifying them with demonstrable falsehoods.”
Regarding Jane Doe, the lawsuit highlights that she originally attempted to sue Brown in January 2022, alleging he sexually assaulted her on Diddy’s yacht in Miami. She sued for battery, as well as intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress. However, the case was dismissed in August of that year after text messages uncovered by Miami police exposed her dishonesty.
