Vybz Kartel, born Adidja Azima Palmer, kicks off his Freedom Street Concert Rehearsal with long time friend Spice, born Grace Latoya Hamilton.

Kartel was originally arrested in 2011 with three other men for the murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams. Although the body of the deceased was never found, in 2014 Palmer was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 35 years to serve. Despite spending more than a decade behind bars, Kartel continued to make music. It was revealed that the artist would wrap himself inside his mattress and record vocals on an iPhone, as other inmates kept watch for guards. Through all the trials and tribulations one person who voiced Kartel’s innocent was Spice.

Spice and Kartel released their hit single “Ramping Shop” in 2009, and the pair has been friends since. Throughout her shows, Spice has always ensured to shout out her friend. Spice and Jada Kingdom touched down in Jamaica this morning for Kartel’s concert, Freedom Street.

The Jamaican-born artist took to her Instagram to showcase her reaction after seeing her friend for the first time in 13 years. Spice could be seen running to give Kartel a massive hug as she smiled ear to ear. She made sure to caption her post: “Reunited after 13 years apart. Tonight @vybzkartel and I are back together on one stage. #FreedomStreet #KingandQueen”

In March 2024, the UK’s Privy Council overturned Kartel’s conviction due to juror misconduct. It was revealed that one of the juror’s offered bribers to other jurors in order to find Kartel guilty. Palmer was released on July 31, after a Jamaican appearance judge ruled against a retrial. He served 13 years.
