Liam Payne Five Charged in Connection to Death
Former One Direction bandmate, Liam Payne, who passed tragically in October family will be facing relief as five are set to be charged in the untimely passing.
According to CNN, the Argentine prosecutor released a statement on Monday indicating that five people have been charged in connection with the British singer’s death. A person identified as Payne’s “representative,” the hotel manager, and the head of reception have been charged with manslaughter, according to the prosecutor. If convicted, they face up to five years in prison.
Additionally, a hotel employee and a local waiter are being charged with supplying Payne with cocaine. The judge has ordered them to remain in jail as they await trial. If convicted, the pair could face up to 15 years in prison.
Last month, Argentine prosecutors stated that the singer had alcohol, cocaine, and prescription antidepressants in his system at the time of his death.
Judge Laura Bruniard, who is overseeing the case, believes that Payne’s state of intoxication may have caused him to mistake the balcony for an exit. Evidence gathered from testimonies, camera footage, and expert reports shows the former bandmate visibly intoxicated in the hotel lobby just minutes before his fall.
According to Judge Bruniard, all parties being charged had the opportunity to prevent Payne’s death but failed to take appropriate action.
The hotel manager, accused of “enabling, at least by omission,” reportedly witnessed Payne in the lobby and instructed staff to escort him back to his room. The head of reception is accused of coordinating with three individuals to return Payne to his room.
The judge noted that the proper course of action would have been “to keep him safe in an area free from potential danger, in the company of others, and to ensure he received medical care.”
Payne’s representative is accused of leaving the hotel less than an hour before the singer’s fatal fall, despite being aware of his condition. According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the defendant “failed to fulfill his duties of care, assistance, and aid,” which contributed to Payne’s untimely death.
Despite the hotel manager, head of reception, and representative being charged with manslaughter, the judge emphasized that their actions were neither coordinated nor premeditated.
In the summer of 2023, Payne had marked six months of sobriety after completing treatment at a U.S. facility. Payne who publicly discussed his struggle with drugs and alcohol appeared to be on the right track. His death sent shockwaves through the nation bringing together former fans and several memorial sites.
