Doechii Performs on NPR Tiny Desk
Three time Grammy nominated artist Doechii is set to perform on NPR’s Tiny Desk ahead of her sold out Alligator Bites Never Heal tour.
Jaylah Ji’mya Hickmon known to the public as Doechii is an American rapper and singer who rose to fame after her debut EP, Oh the Places You’ll Go (2020). Her song “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake” rose to prominence on TikTok when it went viral in 2021. The Florida born artist signed with Top Dawg Entertainment and released her second EP She/Her/Black Bitch (2022).
Doechii entered the Billboard chart at number 29 with her 2023 single “What It Is (Block Boy)” featuring Kodak Black. The single went on to receive platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America. The “Alter Ego” singer was awarded the Rising Star Award from Billboard Women in Music that same year.
Doechii appeared on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” earlier this week in which she created and choreographed a powerful medley. During the performance Doechii and her two dancers could be seen with their braids interconnected as they danced. The unison shared between the trio showcases the creativity of Doechii and a testament to her artistry.
Doechii performed on NPR once again highlighting her creativity and artistry. She can be seen sporting vintage academia looks, complete with matching cornrows and beads. She delivers freshly rearranged medleys of cuts from Alligator Bites Never Heal, tailored specifically for Tiny Desk.
The “What It Is” singer gave a blend of hip-hop but touched into various generes with a jazz version to “BOOM BAP”, a heavy rock vibe to “CATFISH”, and a southern twist to “NISSAN ALTIMA”. She closed her set with “Black Girl Memoir” from her album Oh The Places You’ll Go. Doechii is making a name for herself in the industry through her creativity and unique outlook on the world.
Tickets will go on sale December 7 at 12:00 pm for “Spotlight: Doechii” hosted at the Grammy Museum in Los Angles. The “Spookie Coochie” singer will discuss her new album, nominations, creative process and a special performance. The event is set to take place on December 18.
