Doechii, the rising star from Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE), continued to prove her status as one of her generation’s premier live performers during her appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Wednesday (Dec. 4). Fresh off her acclaimed Alligator Bites Never Heal Tour and a standout set at November’s Camp Flog Gnaw, the rapper delivered a captivating performance that highlighted her lyrical prowess and artistic innovation.

A Unique Performance That Turned Heads

Taking the stage with two backup dancers, Doechii wore a coordinated outfit featuring a Gucci polo shirt, a monogram midi skirt, and Adidas Gazelles. The trio’s hairstyles—braids interlinked in a striking visual statement—caught the attention of viewers online, with some comparing it to Solange’s iconic 2017 performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Doechii performed “BOILED PEANUTS” and seamlessly transitioned into “DENIAL IS A RIVER,” both standout tracks from her latest mixtape, Alligator Bites Never Heal. The performance underscored her ability to blend sharp lyricism with emotional storytelling, solidifying her reputation as a dynamic live performer.

Alligator Bites Never Heal: A Contender for Best Rap Album

Released in late August, Alligator Bites Never Heal is a deeply personal project with a lone feature from KUNTFETISH. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Doechii explained the importance of weaving her life story into the mixtape.

“Projects can feel long when there’s no context to what you’re talking about,” she said. “It was important for me to tell my story in detail—what happened to me, how that made me feel, how I overcame it, and where I am now.”

The project has earned critical acclaim and is a contender for Best Rap Album at the 2025 Grammy Awards. It’s set to compete against major releases such as J. Cole’s Might Delete Later, Future and Metro Boomin’s WE DON’T TRUST YOU, and Eminem’s The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce).

Best New Artist Nomination and Kendrick Lamar’s Endorsement

Doechii’s nomination for Best New Artist further cements her as a key figure in today’s music landscape. This recognition follows a glowing endorsement from Kendrick Lamar, who declared her the “hardest rapper out” during an October interview.

The Future Is Bright for Doechii

From her groundbreaking mixtape to her electrifying live performances, Doechii is redefining what it means to be an artist in today’s rap scene. As she moves closer to Grammy night and continues to make waves with her artistry, it’s clear she’s just getting started.
