On Sunday, October 27, 2024, a brewing feud between Azealia Banks and Lil Nas X took center stage on social media, sparked by Banks’ claim that the Georgia-born rapper had “fallen off” after she allegedly declined a feature request. The Harlem rapper and “Luxury” creator made her opinion known, inciting a rapid response from the “MONTERO” artist.

Lil Nas X hit back on X (formerly Twitter), writing,

“Azealia, I could never make a hit song again, and you would still never in [your] b**sy soap-selling, chicken-sacrificing, botched body-hating a miserable life reach a 10th of my success,” while adding, “Love [your] music, [by the way].”

Banks quickly escalated the back-and-forth, challenging Lil Nas X’s lyrical prowess.

“Where are your bars? We are not going to use patronization to circumvent the topic here. The topic is that you cannot f**king rap, son. You’re a terrible lyricist with pedestrian musical sensibilities,” she posted.

She added that Lil Nas X’s allure lies more in his looks than in his music, calling his style “pedestrian.”

Lil Nas X rocketed to stardom with his 2019 hit “Old Town Road,” which dominated the Billboard Hot 100 for 19 weeks. Since then, his debut album MONTERO spawned multiple chart-toppers, including “INDUSTRY BABY” and “MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name),” which both reached No. 1. Banks, despite her cult following and critically-acclaimed projects like Broke with Expensive Taste and 1991 – EP, has not secured a Hot 100 entry, though both albums placed on the Billboard 200.

Banks continued her diatribe, accusing Lil Nas X of pandering to “old white homos in fashion.” In response, Lil Nas X took to Instagram Stories, showcasing Banks’ song “Out of Space” with a surprisingly supportive message: “I wanna see [you] win and shine your light… [Your] fans love [you]. We love [you].”

In the past, Banks proposed that Lil Nas X pair up with fellow rapper Tyler, The Creator to form a “power couple.” Tyler, known for keeping his private life under wraps, merely laughed off the comment, suggesting his disinterest in the pairing.

This heated exchange highlights both rappers’ complicated relationship with fame and their impact on pop culture, bringing both fans and critics into the ongoing debate about talent, authenticity, and public persona in today’s music scene.
