The 31-year-old’s death occurred shortly after an urgent 911 call was made by the hotel’s chief receptionist, who expressed concern over Payne’s behavior.
According to reports from La Nacion, Clarin, and Sky News, the receptionist described Payne as intoxicated, believing he was “under the influence of alcohol and drugs,” and feared for his safety. The worker insisted emergency services needed to arrive “urgently” as Payne’s life was potentially “in danger” due to his proximity to a balcony. The distressing call was made just 10 minutes before Payne’s fatal fall into the hotel’s internal courtyard.
Local authorities have confirmed an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding Payne’s death, with an autopsy scheduled. Disturbing images from the scene, published by the Daily Mail, show drug paraphernalia and a trashed hotel room.

Payne had been in Argentina since early October, attending former bandmate Niall Horan’s concert at the Movistar Arena with his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy. He leaves behind a 7-year-old son, Bear Grey, whom he shared with ex-partner Cheryl.
