Lyfe Jennings Denied Tiny Desk Performance: ‘Not a Big Enough Celeb’
Fans of R&B singer Lyfe Jennings were surprised to learn that the artist behind hits like “S.E.X.” and “Must Be Nice” won’t be making an appearance on NPR’s popular Tiny Desk Concert series. In a recent Instagram post, Jennings revealed that he was told he wasn’t “big enough” to perform on the platform.
“Last month @Tinydesk told me I wasn’t a big enough celeb to perform on their show. So thank you to Unplugged for [still] believing in me,” the 46-year-old singer wrote.
Jennings, who has been in the music scene for over two decades, is well-known for his soulful voice and heartfelt lyrics. The Ohio native first gained widespread recognition with his 2004 debut album Lyfe 268-192, which went platinum. His 2006 follow-up, The Phoenix, debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 and was one of the top-selling R&B/Hip-Hop albums in 2006 and 2007.
Though Jennings has not released a full-length studio project since 2019’s 777, his legacy and influence in the R&B genre remain undeniable. Despite this, NPR’s Tiny Desk chose to pass on the opportunity to showcase the singer on their iconic stage, which has featured a variety of musicians across genres.
Jennings, however, remains upbeat, expressing gratitude for other platforms, like Unplugged, that continue to support his career. Fans now wonder: Is Lyfe Jennings not “big enough” for Tiny Desk, or is his influence and impact in the R&B world worthy of recognition on the prestigious show?
