Dr. Dre Faces Restraining Order as Marriage Counselor Alleges Harassment in Lawsuit

Dr. Dre is facing a $10 million lawsuit, accused of harassing a marriage counselor who was attempting to mediate his relationship with his ex-wife, Nicole Young.

Dr. Charles J. Sophy claims that Dre launched a “malicious campaign of harassment” against him following his counseling sessions with the music mogul and his former spouse during their marital difficulties.

On Friday, October 11, according to HipHopDX, Sophy successfully filed for a temporary restraining order against Dre, citing a series of alleged threats spanning a year and a half. According to court documents referenced by TMZ, Sophy requested that Dre maintain distance from him, his adult son, and even his two dogs.

Sophy’s lawsuit reveals that he was hired by Dre and his then-wife in 2018 for a “joint psychotherapist-patient relationship,” continuing to provide counseling throughout their divorce, which concluded in December 2021.

The harassment claims reportedly began in February 2023 when Dr. Dre reached out via text, mentioning he had received some “disturbing” information. Allegedly, he followed this up with a threatening message stating, “You’re going to have to pay for that.”

The text exchanges escalated, with Dre accusing Sophy of persuading someone—whose identity is redacted in the lawsuit—to speak negatively about him in the media, a claim that Sophy denies.

Fearing for his safety, Sophy asserts that Dre even sent individuals posing as FBI agents to his residence, prompting him to wear a bulletproof vest for protection.

In response to the lawsuit, Dr. Dre’s attorney, Howard King, stated that the legal action is a counter to a complaint Dre filed with California’s Osteopathic Medical Board regarding Sophy’s behavior during their counseling sessions.

“In gross violation of all applicable standards of care, Dr. Sophy inserted himself into a contentious divorce while he simultaneously ‘treated’ not only Mr. and Mrs. Young, but their children,” King said in a statement.

“He was terminated when it was revealed that he was encouraging one of their children to take sides against Mr. Young, even encouraging his son to go to the press with false allegations in order to force a financial settlement that he recommended. Dr. Sophy has consistently rebuffed Medical Board attempts to investigate these claims, but has now filed this desperate suit while the noose of the Medical Board is tightening.”
