Brooklyn rapper Ka, known for his thought-provoking lyrics and dedication to both music and community, has passed away at the age of 52. His family announced the tragic news on his Instagram account on Monday, October 14, sharing that he died unexpectedly on Saturday.

“Born and raised in Brownsville, Brooklyn, Ka lived a life of service—to his city, to his community, and to his music,” the family’s statement read. Along with his influential role in hip-hop, Ka spent 20 years as a member of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY), where he rose to the rank of captain. He was also a first responder during the 9/11 attacks, a role that demonstrated his commitment to his city and its people.

Ka’s family also requested privacy as they grieve, adding, “He leaves an extraordinary legacy as a recording artist, including eleven remarkable self-released solo albums. Ka is survived by his wife, mother, and sister.”

Ka’s music career began in the early 1990s as a founding member of the group Natural Elements. He later formed the duo Nightbreed with fellow rapper Kev, before launching a successful solo career. He gained widespread recognition for his albums Grief Pedigree (2012) and The Night’s Gambit (2013), which solidified his status as one of hip-hop’s most respected underground lyricists.

In August 2024, Ka released his final album, The Thief Next to Jesus, capping off a discography filled with introspective and conceptual projects. Beyond rapping, Ka was a skilled producer and worked with artists like Roc Marciano, Navy Blue, and Animoss as part of the duo The Hermit and the Recluse. He also collaborated with producer Preservation under the alias Dr. Yen Lo.

The news of Ka’s passing has led to an outpouring of tributes from fans and fellow artists alike. Rapper Mickey Factz wrote, “KA is one of the greatest lyricists ever…. And without rhyming, being a fireman is one of the greatest jobs we as people respect. I’m heartbroken. Condolences to the family.” Rome Streetz also honored Ka, writing, “Rest in paradise to a Legend.”

Ka’s passing marks the loss of a unique voice in hip-hop, someone who used his platform to reflect on life’s deeper meanings while staying true to his roots. His contributions to both music and his community will be remembered for years to come. Rest in peace, Ka.
