Spincity Chris: The Afro-Caribbean Hip-Hop Artist Shaping a New Sound

Published

on

Hailing from Georgetown, Guyana, and now lighting up the music scene in Queens, Spincity Chris is an Afro-Caribbean hip-hop artist carving his own path. Combining the vibrant rhythms of Afro beats, Soca, Dancehall, and Reggae with the gritty, unmistakable influences of New York and Atlanta’s hip-hop scenes, he is creating a genre-bending sound that reflects his heritage and urban surroundings.

Spincity, who moved to the U.S. at eight, developed a passion for music early on. As a child, he learned to play the piano, guitar, and drums, immersing himself in music. At Baruch College, his talent blossomed as he honed his songwriting and freestyling skills while working at the campus radio station WB&B. It was here that he found a mentor in Big Boo, who helped refine his talent and guided him as he stepped deeper into the industry.

In 2019, Chris started recording his music, and when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, he transformed his grandmother’s basement into a home studio. Collaborating with industry insiders like Supreme Carl and DJ Extra, he used the time to push his creative boundaries.

This effort results from his latest EP, Morioh City, a seven-track project that brilliantly fuses Afro-Caribbean sounds with American hip-hop. Teaming up with producer Max Morioh, the EP showcases Chris’s unique ability to weave his roots into urban music, delivering a fresh and innovative sound.

Before Morioh City, he made his mark with his first project, No Doubt, a nod to Atlanta’s trap scene, and the single pack Triple It, where he explored underground rap. His versatility continued with tracks like Wah Ya Seh and West Indian Dreams, which blend the sounds of 50 Cent, Sean Paul, and Afro Dancehall, illustrating his eclectic influences.

But Spincity Chris is more than just a musician. He wears many creative hats as an audience coordinator for MTV, a promoter, a freelance photographer, and a videographer. His work in event coordination and artist mentorship at Baruch College has further strengthened his industry acumen, making him a formidable presence both on and off stage.

Fans won’t have to wait long for what’s next. Chris is gearing up for a rooftop show in Philadelphia on the 31st and plans to release new singles later this year, including a pop-dance club track and a nostalgic 2000s boom-bap collaboration.

With Morioh City as an introduction to his Afro-Caribbean hip-hop style, Spin City Chris is set to make waves. His innovative sound, blending cultures and genres, positions him as a rising star in the music industry, ready to bring his dynamic fusion to listeners everywhere.
