Fatman Scoop’s cause of death has been determined following his collapse on stage during a performance last month.

On Tuesday, September 24, Connecticut’s Chief Medical Officer announced that his death resulted from “hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease,” as reported by the Los Angeles Times. The condition was deemed to have occurred “naturally.”

Hypertensive heart disease arises in individuals with long-term high blood pressure, which puts extra strain on the heart. Atherosclerosis refers to the buildup of plaque on artery walls, narrowing the arteries and impeding blood flow.

Fatman Scoop, whose real name was Isaac Freeman III, was just 56 years old when he passed away in Connecticut after collapsing while performing in Hamden.

Following his death, which was pronounced at a hospital hours later, Scoop’s family shared a heartfelt tribute on social media. “It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of the legendary and iconic Fatman Scoop,” the tribute began. “Last night, the world lost a radiant soul, a beacon of light on the stage and in life.”

The message continued,

“Fatman Scoop was not just a world-class performer; he was a father, brother, uncle, and friend. He brought laughter to our lives and was a constant source of support, unwavering strength, and courage.”

Recognized globally as the “undisputed voice of the club,” Fatman Scoop’s music inspired joy and positivity, and his generosity will be profoundly missed. The tribute concluded, “His legacy of love and brightness will remain in our hearts and memories forever.”

Many figures in Hip Hop have also paid their respects to the late “Be Faithful” artist. Missy Elliott, who collaborated with him on her 2005 hit “Lose Control,” wrote on Instagram:

Ludacris shared his own tribute, stating: “Scoop was one of those people who reminded you of what love truly means. It’s an action, and through his actions, he showed the purest form of passion for Hip Hop. Every person he encountered felt that love and passion. This is the type of legacy we should all strive to continue for eternity.”
