Remy Ma Reflects on Her Time in Prison Calling It The ‘Worst’ Experience of Her Life

Remy Ma has opened up about her most challenging experience, which, unsurprisingly, was her time spent in prison.

In 2008, the ‘Conceited’ rapper received an eight-year sentence, serving six years after being found guilty of assault and criminal possession of a weapon. This conviction stemmed from a 2007 incident where she shot a friend during a dispute over $3,000 that had been taken from her purse. After completing her six-year prison sentence, Remy re-gained her freedom in 2014 and subsequently underwent post-release supervision until 2019.

According to Complex, during a recent episode of Nick Cannon and Courtney Bee’s podcast We Playin’ Spades, which aired on September 16, Remy reflected on her incarceration. Nick inquired about one aspect of her life she would change if given the chance and Remy responded immediately, “Not going to prison, ever. The fuck?”

“Before that, it used to be the worst thing that ever happened was, I got cut in my face… It used to really bother me a lot, and I used to say, this is the worst thing that’s ever happened to me,” she continued. “And then there was the penitentiary. And I was like, this shit not cool. It was the worst thing that I’ve ever endured in my life, ever.”

Cannon noted that both her fans and fellow artists admired her resilience during her six-year sentence, although Remy admitted she had rarely discussed her experiences during that time.

“That’s because nobody really knows what happened. I never talked about it, ever,” she told Cannon. “I’m not supposed to. That’s just how I grew up. Even though, in a lot of ways, the things I feel like they taught us in the hood was ass backwards, it’s not real life.”

At around the 20-minute point in the video below, check out Cannon questioning Remy about the moment in her life she would wish to revisit and alter.
