Sexyy Red, Latto, and Flo Milli Discuss the State of Female Rap in Spotify’s “The Gold Standard”
In July, Spotify launched “The Gold Standard” gallery in New York City, showcasing and celebrating some of Hip Hop’s most influential women—although Nicki Minaj was notably absent. The exhibit featured artists like Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, Doja Cat, Ice Spice, and more.
On Wednesday (Aug. 14), Spotify released a conversation with artists Flo Milli, Latto, and Sexyy Red, where they discussed the current state of rap. Latto highlighted why women are leading the genre, stating, “We’re the ones bringing versatility. People say we all sound the same, but really, it’s the guys who do.”
Flo Milli added that female rappers have remained true to themselves, saying, “A lot of us were rapping before it became a trend. The women who are really popping now stayed authentic and believed in something even when it wasn’t visible.”
Sexyy Red acknowledged the competitive nature of the industry, calling it “a sport.” Latto agreed, pointing out that fans and social media often exaggerate the competition among female rappers.
The conversation also touched on the artists’ inspirations. Latto named TLC’s Left Eye, Gangsta Boo, and Atlanta-based acts like Anycia and Crime Mob’s Princess and Diamond as her influences. Flo Milli mentioned Maiya The Don, whom she collaborated with on several tracks. Sexyy Red cited Lil’ Kim and praised Nicki Minaj for her longevity in the game, saying she hopes to achieve similar staying power.
