Eminem’s next studio album is almost here, and he recently shared that the tracklist was crafted with a specific goal and listening experience in mind.

On Thursday (June 11), just a day before the release of The Death of Slim Shady (Coupe De Grâce), the Detroit rapper took to social media to inform fans that his upcoming release is more than just a random collection of songs.

“Public service announcement: the ‘death of slim shady’ is a conceptual album, therefore, if you listen to songs out of order they might not make sense. Enjoy.”

The Death of Slim Shady (Coupe De Grâce) is set to go live on Friday (July 12).

Earlier this year, Eminem began the album’s rollout by publishing an obituary for his alter ego, Slim Shady, in the Detroit Free Press in mid-May. This piece was tied to the upcoming project.

Accompanied by a picture of the 8 Mile star wearing a Jason Voorhees-style hockey mask reminiscent of his early days, the article’s subheading declared that “Fans ‘Will Never Forget’ [The] Controversial Rapper.”

The article read: “A product of Detroit who began his career there as a rogue splinter in the flourishing underground rap scene of the mid to late 1990s, Shady first became a household name in 1999 with the debut of his playfully deranged single ‘My Name Is,’ which — along with its uniquely eye-catching video — exposed the young artist and his lyrics to a wider audience.

“Ultimately, the very things that seemed to be the tools he used became calling cards that defined an existence that could only come to a sudden and horrific end. His complex and tortured existence has come to a close, and the legacy he leaves behind is no closer to resolution than the manner in which this character departed this world. May he truly find the peace in an afterlife that he could not find on Earth.”

So far, the D12 leader has released two singles to build anticipation for the album: “Tobey” (featuring Big Sean and BabyTron) and “Houdini.”
