Ice Spice Faces Backlash After Dropping New Single “Phat Butt”
Ice Spice has been compared to Nicki Minaj following the release of her latest single, “Phat Butt.”
After the track debuted on Friday (June 21), fans noted the Bronx rapper’s flow resembled Minaj’s style, particularly her song “Shanghai” from The Pinkprint album.
Ice Spice’s Instagram was soon filled with comments highlighting the similarities. One commenter wrote, “I wouldn’t be surprised if this was one of Nicki’s throwaways. Regardless, I like that she switched up the flow. Still don’t care to see her axx all day but you can’t win em all.”
Another joked, “What in the Nicki Minaj is this?” while a third claimed, “I think Nicki wrote this.”
Ice Spice has previously acknowledged Nicki Minaj’s significant influence on her career. Speaking to Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe, she recalled her first meeting with Minaj, saying,
“I was, like, nervous to get there. Once I got there, I was like, ‘Okay, I’m chilling.’ But then I heard her, like, say something, and then I got nervous. When she hugged me, I started crying… I cried, but I walked away. Like, I didn’t say anything to her. I just feel like, ‘Bro, like just the journey.’ You know, I love Nicki, and meeting her was great and everything, but for me, it also just mostly felt like, ‘This is a full circle moment.’”
The two artists have since collaborated on two major hits last year: “Princess Diana (Remix)” and “Barbie World” from the Barbie movie soundtrack.
Nicki Minaj has also shown her support for Ice Spice, previously calling her the “princess of rap.” Commenting on one of Ice Spice’s Instagram posts, Minaj wrote, “B*tchs slow so I gih dem a pass. 🔥 Nah. Grah! No more passes Princess…Let’s go.”
