Offset Drops Lawsuit Against Former Label Quality Control
Offset has seemingly resolved his issues with Quality Control Music by dropping a lawsuit against the label regarding his solo music catalog rights.
According to documents obtained from TMZ, the rapper chose to withdraw his case against QC on August 8th. The legal battle, initiated in 2022, stemmed from allegations that the music giant failed to honor an agreement pertaining to Offset’s rights for his solo work. These supposed rights were reportedly settled both financially and through negotiation in 2021.
Quality Control, on the other hand, countered the rapper’s claims by stating that they still held the rights, citing an existing agreement with Motown. Pierre “P” Thomas and Kevin “Coach K” Lee, the founders, argued that the audio recordings created by Offset belonged inherently to QC due to contractual obligations. This included his recent tracks like “54321” and “Code.”
Nevertheless, Offset’s legal team pushed back against this assertion. The attorney representing the “Clout” rapper declared, “Quality Control no longer possesses the copyright to Offset’s individual sound recordings, and they are no longer licensing those recordings to Capitol. Capitol has now gained direct ownership of Offset’s solo sound recordings from Offset himself.”
Despite the intense conflict, it appears that things have now settled amicably between the concerned parties. While Offset won’t be renewing his contract with QC as a solo artist, the air has finally been cleared.
Offset’s association with the label goes back to 2013, when Migos signed a record deal. Throughout their collaboration, the trio released multiple albums, including the recent Culture III. In 2019, Offset launched his first solo album, Father of 4, which was jointly released by Quality Control, Motown, and Capitol Records. The album, comprising 16 tracks, featured guest appearances from artists like J. Cole, Gunna, CeeLo Green, and others.
On a more positive note, Offset is currently riding the wave of his recent achievements. His latest single, “JEALOUSY,” a collaboration with Cardi B, has garnered over 7 million streams on Spotify. Simultaneously, the music video accompanying the track has surpassed 11 million views on YouTube.
