SVM Is Proving Trap Dancehall Is Here to Stay With Single “Gucci”
SVM is a Trap Dancehall artist who is definitely making his mark in the industry with his latest single “Gucci”. The St.Mary, Jamaica native began releasing music in 2021 but has always loved music from a young age – drawing inspiration from Michael Jackson and various Hip-Hop artists like Young Thug & Gunna. Trap Dancehall is a fairly new genre mixing the genres of Rap and Dancehall together. The Trap Dancehall genre has received a lot of backlash due to many believing that it is taking away from the origins of Dancehall music. Traditional Dancehall has been known to have vulgar lyrics with an emphasis on rhythms that are made to get you dancing and wining at the next party. Trap Dancehall on the other hand is a bit more gritty with artists talking about violence, crime, and other things much inner-city youth in Jamaica face.
In October 2022 Jamaica’s broadcasting regulator banned music and TV broadcasts deemed to glorify or promote criminal activity, violence, drug use, scamming, and weapons. Many Dancehall /Reggae artists believe this was an act used to erase the genre and the population in Jamaica who is affected by gun violence, drug use, and criminal activity. Despite this, we are glad to still see Trap Dancehall artists flourishing worldwide like Skillibeng, Skeng & now SVM.
With over 100,000 views on YouTube SVM’s track “Gucci” meets us with traditional dancehall lyrics while also providing a modern twist that taps into heavy trap rap. The music video is also very unique with SVM being in different sceneries reciting his lyrics. SVM’s eccentric twist on Dancehall makes him an artist we should keep an eye out for and we’re excited to see what’s next. He is proving that Dancehall is a genre that can transcend & grown in various ways & through multiple generations.
