Silk Sonic “Bows Out” of Grammy Consideration

In a recent statement, the group seemingly renounced submitting their album for the acclaimed award show as they seek to just enjoy the event at this point. On November 12, 2021, Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak released their joint project ‘An Evening With Silk Sonic’ which was immediately met with rave reviews anchored by the soul-infused single, “Leave The Door Open” that swept both the Song and Record of the Year categories during April’s Grammy ceremony. Today, Rolling Stone reported an exclusive from Mars that the supergroup has decided to not submit their album for Grammy consideration.

“We truly put our all on this record, but Silk Sonic would like to gracefully, humbly and most importantly, sexually, bow out of submitting our album this year,” Mars says. “We hope we can celebrate with everyone on a great year of music and partake in the party. Thank you for letting Silk Sonic thrive.”

Normally, when the lane is this wide open artists will drive in for the flush – effectively claiming all if not most of the awards they’re projected to win but this is neither Bruno Mars nor Anderson .Paak’s first rodeo. In fact, between the two they have 15 Grammys as solo acts with Mars’s 11 and .Paak’s four, respectively. It seems fitting that the duo who has been a very fun addition to the last couple installments of the award show are looking to share the love in a year that has been very exciting for music.

“Andy and I, and everyone that worked on this project, won the moment the world responded to ‘Leave The Door Open.’ Everything else was just icing on the cake,” says Mars. “We thank the Grammys for allowing us to perform on their platform — not once but twice — and awarding us at last year’s ceremony. We’d be crazy to ask for anything more.”

In a statement following the announcement, Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. thanked the duo for being a “fun highlight” at the previous two shows. “We appreciate their decision not to submit this year but look forward to celebrating an amazing year in music together,” he added.

Aside from the Silk Sonic wins, .Paak won Best R&B Album for ‘Ventura’ in 2020 and Best Melodic Rap Performance for “Lockdown” the following year. Mars’s 2018 Grammy run was a sweep as he won in all six categories he was nominated for with his instant-classic ‘24k Magic’ album.
