Imagine your favorite girl group in the 90’s and 2000’s – forming together as a super group? Well, look no further since it is coming into fruition!
Earlier in the year, The Jasmine Brand broke the news of former group mates from the likes of: Danity Kane, 3Lw, Total, Blaque, Cherish, and Nivea (as the only stand-alone artist) will all be featured on a 10-episode docuseries on the BET network, which is to be called: “BET Presents: The Encore.” The storyline consists of the 9 singers living in a house together for one month to record an album.
In the docu-series, the ladies will learn how to infuse their octaves together and learn choreography.
The cast members include a star-studded, multi-faceted set of singers/songwriters, such as: Pamela Long of Total who was signed to Bad Boy Records in the mid-1990’s. The R&B trio (Kima Raynor & Keisha Spivey) amassed platinum status of their debut self-titled album, garnering hit singles like, “Can’t You See?” Which landed in the top 20 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and peeked at number two on the R&B charts. Their other singles, “Kissin’ You” and “What About Us?” also landed on the Billboard charts as well as featured singles (LL Cool J, Mase, Notorious BIG). Though Total’s career was short lived, disbanding in 1998 – the trio left an impressionable impact in the music industry. Unlike other groups at that time, the trio had a unique and divine sound whilst dressing in tom-boy clothing.
Another trio, 702 also left an impression in the music industry back in the late 90’s and 2000’s. The trio had hits such as “Steelo,” “Get it Together,” and “Where My Girls At?” which reached the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B/Pop charts. Sisters; Irish and LeMisha Grinstead from 702 will also appear in the docu-series. Other castmates includes: Shamari DeVoe of Blaque (Bring it All to Me and 808), Aubrey O’Day of Danity Kane (Show Stopper and Damaged) Kiely Williams from 3LW (Playas Gon’ Play and No More (Baby, I’ma Do Right), twin sisters Felisha and Fallon King from the R&B quartet Cherish (Do It to It and Amnesia), and last but certainly not least, Nivea which is the only Grammy-Nominated artist in the household. Records such as: “Okay,” “Laundromat,” and “Don’t Mess With My Man,” reached on Billboard Hot 100, R&B, and Pop charts with her first two albums reaching platinum and double platinum status. Safe to say, all of these women will bring a multi-dimensional and talented acumen from singing and songwriting abilities.
Carlos King is the executive producer and content creator of The Encore, stated that he’s excited for this new show to make its debut. According to his interview with the Associated Press:
“I felt that girl groups never got its just do, and I as a content creator wanted to — educated the masses on who I feel are the forgotten sisters of music.” King continues, “I wanted to pay homage to that industry and really give these women an opportunity to share their stories and their struggles.”
Carlos King has been a producer for The Real Housewives of Atlanta and Season 25: Oprah Behind the Scenes, and The Four, which is music competition weekly show.
Accompanying with King, Tiffany Lea Williams, whose BET’s executive VP of unscripted programming and development chimed in during the press conference, stating: “This series will bring fans behind the scenes in the music-making process, reconnect them with some of their favorite chart-topping singers and deliver unforgettable stories from celebrities they love.”
The series is slated to make its debut on June 9th on BET. Check out the 30-second teaser after the jump:
