Despite being incarcerated for the past two years, last week the controversial 22-year old Florida-phenom, YNW Melly released his new star-studded project, Just A Matter Of Slime – over the weekend climbing to be the #1 Album on Apple Music.

Just A Matter Of Slime is the long-awaited, meticulously crafted project that YNW Melly fans have been waiting for – throughout the project showcasing the various sides of Melly’s unmistakable, crooning vocal style, innovative melodic flows, and the dark, magnetic energy surrounding the talented, if not troubled young artist.

According to TMZ, Melly has spent his last eight months behind bars coordinating his album with his 100K Management team: everything from song selection and creative direction, to production choices, to securing any one of the project’s many high profile features.  Speaking of which, Just A Matter Of Slime is jam-packed with what has to be the most impressive, A-List feature list of 2021 – containing many of the biggest names in music including Future, Kodak Black, Lil Baby, Lil Durk, Young Thug, Lil Uzi Vert, Kevin Gates, Tee Grizzley, Queen Naija, Hotboii, and Lil Tjay.

Last Thursday, on the eve of the album’s release, the team posted a video call from Melly to his IG page – announcing the new project, encouraging fans to go stream and download, and showing off his permanently icey smile and inexplicably obtained Gucci footwear.

Leading up to the release, Melly and team did a great job to build momentum with a series of singles and fully-produced visuals including “Pieces” feat. Queen Naija, “Yung N*** Shit” feat. YNW Gunna & Hotboii, “Best Friends 4L” feat. LilTjay  – which topped 1.5M in its first week.  The album also includes “Thugged Out”, the collab with Kodak originally released in April following his widely publicized release as a result of a presidential pardon – the video for which has racked up over 5M views. The visual for “Mind of Melvin” feat. Lil Uzi Vert dropped on the same day as the album, racking up 1.3M views in its first weekend.

Just A Matter Of Slime is Melly’s second official studio album, following his debut studio album Melly Vs Melvin released in 2019 – which is RIAA-certified gold, peaked at #8 on the Billboard 200, and featured the hugely successful single “223’s” feat 9lokknine. The project also featured “Suicidal” which – along with the remix featuring the late Juice WLRD – has gone on to be one of Melly’s biggest songs to date (second on the “Murder on my Mind”), peaking at #20 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2018, Melly dropped his debut commercial mixtape,  I Am You, which would later appear on the Billboard 200, peaking at #192. Followed by We All Shine in 2019 – whose standout single “Mixed Personalities” featuring Kanye West and its Cole Bennett-directed music video marked a pivotal moment in the young star’s career.

The warm reception and early success of Just a Matter of Slime shows that there is still a huge appetite for the unique brand of dark, moody, melodic hip hop music that Melly helped pioneer – backdropped by the captivating and very serious real-life drama playing out in the young artist’s life. Thankfully, Melly and the team were able to put together an incredible project, which so far appears to be getting the love and recognition it deserves.
