EP Review: @LilNasX – ‘7’

Many weeks after his Country/Hip-Hop viral hit took over our ears and charts, Lil’ Nas X prices he’s simply more than just another one-hit wonder with his debut extended play entitled ‘7.’ Like many of his musical peers, X merges Pop with varying music styles such as R&B, Hip Hop, Blues, Rock and Country on ‘7.’

The EP starts with his leading hit, “Old Town (Remix)” with Billy Rae Cyrus, then leads to his new hit, “Panini,” which perfectly mixes Pop with some R&B melodic elements. A theme that continues with this song, the rock influenced “F9mily (You & Me)” & “Kick It” are lyrics of long for connecting different relationship types, though in his own words “now you’re all over the place” when it comes to lyrical direction.

Much like his initial single, “Rodeo” has a tinge of Country Western vibes. Nas previewed the song while working on in the studio weeks ago on Twitter. This time, the highly anticipated track now features Bronx rapper Cardi B.

“Brown You Down” is much less Pop in comparison to the rest of the album. It’s almost entirely Grunge and is very reminiscent of Nirvana, which is followed by the conclusive track “C7osure (You Like)” where he sings about choosing his own path. The EP officially ends with the original version of “Old Town Road.”

In all, the EP is on trend musically with what’s going on now but still sets Li’ Nas X apart from the crowd with his stream-of-conscious storytelling style. “Old Town Road (Remix),” “Rodeo,” and “Bring You Down” serves as standout tracks, but trust and believe the whole EP worth the listen.
