Lil Nas “Old Town Road” received a lot of controversy when it first dropped. It was a country tune with a mixture of hip hop. The track initially earned the rare distinction of appearing on both Billboard‘s country singles chart and its R&B/hip-hop singles chart. Then it was dropped from the country charts because they said that the sound of the song didn’t qualify it as a country. Which turned into the moment of the song getting the boost it needed. Will Calder, who handles the programming for WPYO, a pop radio station in Orlando stated that “The second it got pulled off the country chart, it got the steam it needed to really become mass appeal. People who aren’t really familiar with the memes are now hearing this thing.”
Meanwhile, for country gatekeepers, the controversy around Lil Nas X’s genre classification created an opening for strategic counter-programming. Moving quickly to add a verse to the “Old Town Road” remix, the singer Billy Ray Cyrus. Now, the tune has everyone thinking the song sounds like the future of country music. They performed the hit single at Stagecoach April 28 for the first time. Fans were singing along with every word when Cyrus, DJ Diplo, and Lil Nas X performed dripping in gold fringe.
The video for the remix dropped today with cameos from Chris Rock, Rico Nasty, Diplo, Ha Ha Davis, Jozzy, and “Old Town Road” beat creator YoungKio. Also if you pay attention to the short monologue at the beginning of the video Lil Nas X says ” I don’t know man last time I was here they weren’t to welcome to outsiders” and Billy Ray Cyrus responds with “It’s okay you’re with me this time”. If you caught it, it was a quick reference to the country community not accepting his original version into the country genre. What a great way to throw that in the video.
