On a cold New York Friday morning, gospel sensation Tina Campbell sat with Tabitha Williams to discuss the joys of her solo nomination for Best Gospel Song/Performance (“Too Hard Not To”).
There is so much preparation that goes into one’s Grammy attendance especially when nominated; figuring out what to wear, and the major question of whether or not you will win, Tina Campbell shares how she handles it all.
Tina is elated at the mention of her nomination after having success with multiple Grammys wins as a member of the duo Mary Mary. Stating that, her solo nomination comes as a surprise, neither she nor her team did any major promotion for her album. Tina received an ecstatic call from her publicist and team during the early morning hours, conveying that she has been nominated for a Grammy. Where most artists would have jumped, and danced out of bed, Tina said she experienced some shock and went back to sleep. “I’m honored by the nomination, but after 18 years in this industry I won’t allow whether I win or lose to make or break me.”
On the importance of the Grammy’s, Tina advises artists to work on their campaign at the time of their nomination. Utilize the attention garnered from the nomination, because at this time the entire music industry is paying attention to you. There isn’t a major life change after winning a Grammy. “Understand that it’s all an opportunity…take advantage of the moment.”
In that fashion, win or lose Tina is preparing to continue her web series with her husband, Teddy Campbell. They plan to launch their store and website on February 14th. Her goal is to cultivate the skillset of a person behind the scenes as opposed to her well-versed experience as the talent.
*Tina Campbell did not win a Grammy on January 28th but she plans to keep her momentum going.
