The Queens of NY join forces. As Remy Ma prepares for the release of her highly-anticipated sophomore album, 7 Winters & 6 Summers, she taps Lil’ Kim for her lead single, “Wake Me Up.” The “Queen Bitch”-sampled record finds the Bronx bomber paying homage to the rap veteran.
“If Peter Piper pecked ’em, I bet you Remy ducked ’em,” she raps the way Kim did in ’96. “I told you not to touch ’em / It’s not up for discussion.”
The two ladies, who haven’t always been on good terms later squashed their feud after acknowledging respect for one another.
“I wanted to pay homage to Kim,” she said. “I feel like she is the Madonna of the hip-hop world. Her style is iconic and I wanted to pay homage to that. I was like, ‘I want you on this record, but I want you to just be Kim. I want you to be the girl that was squatting down in a leopard thong,’” she recently told Beats 1.
Kim shared similar sentiments in a recent interview: “My mind ain’t on ol’ girl or anything else. I don’t care about that,” she told Hot 97. “It’s so boss for me to let Remy do her thing and she kind of homaged me on this whole song. It’s a dope ass song. I know my fans are gonna love it. This song is something they’ve always wanted me to kind of do.”
Prior to its release, it was speculated as a Nicki Minaj diss record but Remy and Kim have both denied those claims, although a lot of the bars and even hook seems to address the Queens native.
I’m rich, I’mma stay that bitch!
You fake-ass bitch, you owe homage, pay that shit!
Spray that fif’, the crown, I’mma take that shit
‘Cause you a clown and Homey don’t play that shit!
See, they ain’t slick, be talkin’ all cray and shit
And then you see ’em, they be like that they ain’t say that shit!
7 Winters & 6 Summers, Remy’s first album in 12 years, due in early 2018 on Columbia Records. Lil’ Kim also just released her buzz single, “Took Us a Break,” which will be followed up by an official single as she gears up for her fifth studio album, due next year.
