During JAY-Z’s headlining set at the Meadows Music and Arts Festival on Friday (Sept. 15), he decided to honor Colin Kaepernick before performing “The Story of O.J.”, a song off his latest album “4:44.”
JAY showed respect for Kaepernick who has been in the media lately due to his bold resistance against the social injustice that have been occurring. Kaepernick has been lauded and criticized for his decision to kneel during the national anthem at football games in protest of police brutality. “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” Kaepernick told NFL.com last year.
“I want to dedicate this song to Colin Kaepernick tonight,” JAY-Z said before performing “The Story of O.J.,” according to ESPN . “I want to dedicate this song to anyone that was held back and you overcame,” JAY- Z added, while also dedicating the song to legendary comedian and activist Dick Gregory, who died last month.
“The Story of O.J.” references O.J. Simpson while talking about race and financial empowerment. The song is very powerful because of the clever lyrics and analogies Hip Hop genius JAY-Z uses to explain factual observations in our society.
Kaepernick is currently a free agent quarterback and unsigned; many believe it is because of his stance on injustice. JAY isn’t the only celebrity standing in support with the NFL player, Cardi B, J. Cole and many others have made statements defending Kaepernick’s efforts.
