La’Porsha Renae, runner up of the 15th and final season of Fox Networks’ made-to-fame series American Idol, is a recording artist now signed with Motown Records. She is a small town girl from Mississippi, single mother, and domestic violence survivor. During her adolescence, she had listened and have been inspired musically by Tina Turner, Michael Jackson, and Whitney Houston. Much of the soul-like vibe and edgy lyrics you have heard from her past work, single “Battles”, exemplifies the caliber of what is to come with her debut album Already All Ready scheduled to release on March 31st.
Title track “Already All Ready” was selected to be the album title because it sums up all of the insecurities La’Porsha has overcome and in the most bold way displays them for the world to see. She is now confident and comfortable within her own skin in being the big haired, curvaceous, brown-skinned female willing to reveal her truth.
In speaking with her about the album, she highlights her billboard single released this past fall “Good Woman,” as being one most personal to her. In the song, she says “I’m tolerating yo mama.” La’Porsha had the life of Jennifer Lopez’s character Charlotte in the 2005 film Monster in Law. Another track on the album Stay, is about the relationship she shared with her high school sweetheart. She actively attended counseling and therapy sessions to sort out the skeletons in her closet-which in turn gave her the confidence to share them with us.
I don’t regret it [counseling] at all. Counseling was one of the best things that happened to me. I was told to take those insecurities and wear them. Wear your dirt because it is a form of acceptance. Accepting and loving yourself cuts down on depression and stopping your potential.
The album was completed towards the end of 2016 – only took four months.
La’Porsha shares with us the most rewarding part of being a mother to her daughter is watching her as she completes milestones, whether it be potty training or reciting the ABC’s.
When it comes to her brand, we’ve only known La’Porsha to rock her natural hair in a fro larger than life. When asked about the products she swears by, she keeps it old school and tells us Blue Magic Conditioner & Hair Dress and water. For all those looking to flourish like La’Porsha, here is what she recommends:
Wear a lot of protective styles. Braids or twist-outs will help grow your hair really fast. Your hair could grow 1-2 inches every 3 months.
When you grow up in your mother’s beauty salon, you pick up a thing or two.
As a domestic violence survivor, she is familiar with the struggles in exiting the relationship and starting anew, but what La’Porsha talks about is how those who know victims in need of support can create a judgement free zone which can enable them to help.
Be patient. Hint towards getting that person out of the situation. Bring them to certain environments to sit down and talk with a survivor so that they can see how their life can turn out, because a lot of people stay in those relationships out of fear that they’ll be ridiculed or not knowing the resources available to them. Best way to support is to educate.
