There is no such thing as overnight success. For Sevyn Streeter, becoming second best was never an option. Through hard work, persistence, talent, and sacrifice Sevyn has proven that all things are possible. For 7 years, Sevyn has took a peek into the spotlight, writing for major singers including Chris Brown, K. Michelle, Usher, and Ariana Grande. With a mix of released EP’s throughout the years, Sevyn is finally stepping full out into the spotlight with her first forthcoming album Girl Disrupted, which is schedule to be released sometime in the late spring. Sevyn’s fans have been patiently waiting for an album and instead of using their imagination, Sevyn is teasing fans with releasing many tracks from her upcoming album and even sat down to talk to us about what fans can expect.
MS: Congratulations on going on your 18-city tour for Girl Disrupted!! Your fans have been waiting a long time for an album. In the past, you have only released EP’s. Describe the feeling and thoughts that ran through your mind when you finally realized you were getting ready to drop an album.
SS: Pure happiness! It’s been a long time coming for my fans & I. I’m fully aware that you only get one first album, so I’m just going to enjoy this moment.
MS: Let’s get into this album girl! You mentioned you and your label came up with an idea of dropping a single each month up until the release of the album. One of my favorite songs so far has to be “Before I do.” You mentioned in an interview that this kind of your ode to Aaliyah, talk to me about the influence Aaliyah and 90’s music has had on finding your own voice and sound.
SS: The influence of Aaliyah & 90’s music runs very deep for me. They went against the grain & set out to sound and be different, no matter what else was popular at the time. They all had their own identities. I try an approach my music the same way.
MS: You are very big on family, Sevyn. You played Tina Turner at your family’s reunion which was hilarious! You also made a touching tribute to your father on his birthday on Instagram. Do you think you would have been the woman that you are today if it wasn’t for him?
SS: Absolutely not. My dad is the foundation of who I am. Our relationship is the most important relationship in my entire life. He’s taught me to always have self-respect & to know your self worth over anything else. I know & stand firmly in who I am because I had a father who told, but most importantly, showed me every single day.
MS: You have had relationships in the past in the public eye – and had to deal with the public and their opinions, views. Has that experience kind of change the way you date today? Do you have a guard up? How can a guy get to know you?
SS: The one thing I pride myself on, is the ability to not allow my past pains affect my hearts future. No I’m not guarded, because how would the right person ever find me? I am however, more vocal about what I like & dislike. It’s not that complicated over here. If a guy is interested, he should simply say so. I’m just a woman at the end of the day (a southern, country woman) who values dating & courtship. Get with it or get out my way!
MS: You recently dropped a new single “Fallen” featuring Ty Dolla $ign and Cam Wallace. How did that relationship come about to collaborate with Ty?
SS: What people don’t know is, the same week I wrote “It Won’t Stop” is when I started writing/working with Ty I’ve always been a fan of his work, especially the truth in his writing! So getting him on “Fallen” was an easy phone call.
MS: Fallen featuring Ty Dolla Sign is a sexy, sensual vibe song. How were you able to get into your element for this song? Has any personal or life experiences influence the making of this song?
SS: It wasn’t hard at all to get into character for this record. I feel like we’ve all experienced this feeling. Being infatuated with someone & not knowing if it was the beginning of love or lust. I’ve been there & that’s what “Fallen” is all about.
MS: We are so excited for you and we cannot wait for the release of Girl Disrupted! Any last minute surprises or details you want your fans to know before the release?
SS: I just want my fans to know that I poured countless hours of blood, sweat, tears & time into this album! Every emotion I experienced through in the course of creating it, has its own song. It made me a stronger woman/person in so many ways.
It would be no surprise to see Sevyn’s anticipated album Girl Disrupted climbing straight to the top when released in the spring. For now, enjoy her newly released single “Fallen”, featuring Ty Dolla Sign.
